Lead Farmers Trained, Equipped on Water Harvesting
Forty-five farmers in Tharaka Nithi County are better equipped to combat drought and improve food security following a water harvesting training session held at the Marimanti Rural Training Center. The training was organized by the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) with support from the United Church of Canada (UCC) / Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB).
The 20 male and 25 female Conservation Agriculture Lead Farmers were trained how to identify water source and implement rainwater harvesting techniques so as to address water scarcity in arid and semi-arid areas of Tharaka Nithi County. They were especially traken through practical skills of setting up water harvesting ponds on their farms.
To actualize the training, the NCCK provided the trainees with dam liners to enable them construct their water reserviors which will serve as demonstration sites for the farmers in their locales.
When water ponds are set up, they enable the farmers to harvest rain water which they then use to cultivate high-value crops during the dry seasons, thereby contributing to enhanced food security and increased family incomes.
The training of the 45 CALFs is part of the Enhancing Food Security project that is targeting to transform the lives of 4,000 farmers in Tharaka Nithi County.
