SMEP IN SUMMARY
Small and Micro Enterprise Programme is a not-for-profit-making micro finance institution. It is registered as a Company Limited by Guarantee but with no share capital.
Before its registration in April 1999, SMEP operated as a small project of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) under the name Small Scale Business Enterprise.
As SSBE, it in 1975 as a feeding project in the Mathare Valley in Nairobi, providing the urban poor in the slums with the minimum food required for survival.
Recognizing that the feeding project could not continue indefinitely, the Council developed a micro-credit scheme in 1978 aiming at helping the people become self reliant. The Programme with support from USAID developed the current scheme with a loan through K-REP. As at the end of 1997, SSBE had 2,500 clients and a portfolio of KShs 26 million.
On 10th February, 1998, the Executive Committee of NCCK ratified the establishment of an autonomous Company, SMEP, to carry out the micro finance activities. This decision was made in line with the realization that majority of poor Kenyans have no access for credit and banking services.
