Moving Testimonies of students on Scholarships
The National Council of Churches offers Secondary School scholarships to bright but vulnerable students across the country. These students are carefully selected to ensure that the help goes to the most vulnerable bright students.
As part of the mentorship program the NCCK holds regular retreats for the students under scholarships during which they are trained on various Lifeskills and career related issues.
This December the retreats were held in the nine regions of the Council with each region hosting the students coming from their area who are beneficiaries.
The topics the students were trained on include: Peer Support and Peer Pressure, Healthy Relationships, and Personal Development and Goals. Others were Drug and Substance Abuse, Management of leisure time and Career Development. The students also got time to share their experiences and also an opportunity to ask questions to the experienced facilitators.
Below are testimonies of our students from North Rift region whose lives NCCK is proud to have impacted.
NAME: KRISTIANNE AINQULLAH TABU
SCHOOL: KENYA HIGH SCHOOL
LEVEL: FORM III 2011
I went to school to UG primary from class 1 to four. I then transferred to Our Lady of Assumption Academy and repeated class five. In 2007 we moved to Chepkanga due to financial strain where I went to a rural public school called Sosiot primary school. The education there was not so good and I rapidly dropped in performance. In term three class eight I was lucky enough to get an opportunity to join a private school where I stayed for the rest of the term and at the end when I did my KCPE I did so well.
I was called to Kenya high school but I did not get a promised sponsorship hence my parents struggled with fees for the first two years. Thankfully I got the NCCK sponsorship and it has really helped me stay in school. I pray that as I sit my KCSE next year I will pass and be able to pursue a degree in mass communication.
NAME: SIMON M KARANJA
I am Simon M Karanja. I was born in 1985 in Bahati, Nakuru North District in the vast Nakuru County.
I started schooling in Murungaru primary school in Nakuru District. Since I come from a very humble background, I didn’t join secondary school immediately. I delayed for four years just toiling and moiling trying to earn a living.
Early 2005 I joined FR Genesio high school. I was frustrated because of frequent flushing from school. There was a devastating fees accumulation.
God answered my prayer through NCCK third term 2006. I became a beneficiary of NCCK sponsorship. This gave me an opportunity to learn wishing to become what I am still thirsty of.
Late 2007 I joined Goshen high school where I sat for KCSE and attained B plain. Now I have high hopes to be the best. Thanks to NCCK fraternity. God bless.
NAME: REBECCA NGUGI
SCHOOL: LORETO HIGH MATUNDA
LEVEL: FORM II 2011
It all started in 2007 during the election crisis thing, and our house belongings were destroyed and due to the movements due to the killings, so many of our belongings like clothes, utensils, chairs were stolen but fortunately the house wasn’t burnt down. By then my brother was in form 3 at Mangu high School and I was in standard 7 Kipkeino Primary school. Both of us needed school fees and since we had gone back to square A in the house my father who by then was teaching Kipkeino school had to cater for all the needs. But luckily the runner Kipchoge Keino announced that every student whose parent is Kipkeino’s teacher shouldn’t pay fees and that’s how I learned up to standard 8 free. Then the big problem was in high school, where fees were a great problem and I was like after every two weeks am out of school due to school fees. I thank God for NCCK because through their help am now able to remain in school.
NAME: ANGEL MOSES
I joined high school after long years in primary school back in 2005. As a fresher in high school I got adjusted to the environment that was quite different. After I did my end year exams I went home only to come back in first term in term two not to continue but to drop out of school because of fees. The drop out went till 2008. My connection to NCCK came about a person who really wanted to know about my life , after mentioning to that about school I was directly sent to school by the grace of God when I mentioned about a terrible past, to where I am, is all about God’s grace.
Thank you.

Even if I had passed well to go to a boarding school, I couldn’t due to the crippling poverty in our home since my parents had divorced long time ago and I was just left with our mum. But all in all, after much struggle I got this sponsorship from NCCK. Thanks be to God.

FUTURE PLANS: To join one of the best boarding schools.
NAME: NAHASHON MIWIZI MAINA 55/39/09
Life is not like a crystal clear. 2007 was the year that things fall apart. Our investments up in Eldoret were turn to ashes. My dreams seemed to be shredded but NCCK brought a ray of light, now 4 year down the line, secondary school has elapsed and I’m hoping to produce excellent results next year. God bless u and God bless NCCK.
NAME: BOWEN L KEN
SCHOOL: KABARNET BOYS HIGH
LEVEL: FORM II 2011.
I was raised up from a family of a single parent. My mother is the one paying for us the school fees since we are two in secondary school and one in college.
There have been so many challenges in my secondary school education due to fees payment problems. But I am ahppy that I am now sponsored by the NCCK. Also I am happy that my dream of becoming an aeronautic engineer will come along since nothing can deprive me from achieving.
NAME: ONKOBA M ISAAC
PLACE: KISII COUNTY
I finished my primary education in 2008 and passed very well in my KCPE exams. I got an admission to Nakuru high school but it was very difficult due to financial problems. However well wishers and relatives managed to support me for the first and I joined school.
It was late in form two that I managed to get my sponsorship from the NCCK and it has helped me a lot. I have now settled in my studies and can concentrate well in order to perform well in my final exams next year.
I have faith that God will help me to be successful because he has brought me from far. I also thank you sincerely for the support you are offering me.
NAME: JEPKORIR
I did my KCPE on 2007. I passed well and I was called to join Enomataslani high school. Since my parents are farmers, they did not afford to pay my school fees and the same time transport; they forced them to take me to a nearby school.
They managed to get the school fees and they paid the school fees for the first term because it was a must. From the second term onwards life changed on my side. School fees became a big problem on me. Most of the times I was sent home to collect school fees and that did not stop me from working hard.
God opened the way through NCCK and paid my school fees since form two third term and my life changed from there.
It is my prayer that God bless you so much in this work. I hope in future I will be among those who will assist the needy in the society.
I would like also to ask you if possible you may assist my brothers and sisters who are following me. One is joining form three and the other is waiting to join form one next year.
May the Almighty God bless the work of your hands abundantly.
NAME: CHEPTOO JUDITH
I am Cheptoo Judith I was born in the year 1994. I schooled in Cheptingting primary school from nursery to class eight. Due to financial problems, I was forced to repeat class 8 since we were in the same class with my sister. My sister had to join Kaplong girls.
I join AIC Litein girls in the year 2008. Only Kshs. 10,000.00 was paid as school fees for the whole year yet Kshs. 22,000.00 was supposed to be paid.
When I was in form two I had Kshs. 21,000 as arrears since there was nobody to pay my fees. From my early childhood I had been with my grandmother since my mother had gone to Kericho to look for a job. After that she transferred to Nakuru where she managed to get married to a man from Keiyo.
For ten years she had been in Keiyo up to the year 2010 when she came back. By then I was in form three and I had been sponsored by NCCK. I thank God for the far that He has brought me.
