Governance and Social Services
To facilitate the creation of a just and sustainable society, the Council develops and implements initiatives covering a wide spectrum of sectors. The initiatives are clustered under four thematic areas: Constitutional and Legislative Reforms; Ethical Governance and Accountability; Peace Building and Conflict Prevention; and, Environment.
Objectives of GSS
a. To enhance good governance, democracy, rule of law, accountability, security and observance of human rights
b. To facilitate Churches and communities to identify their needs, acquire necessary resources and promote social service provision that is holistic, relevant and self sustaining.
Thematic Areas
To achieve this objective, the initiatives developed under GSS are undertaken through four thematic areas:
a. Constitutional and Legislative Reforms
b. Ethical Governance and Accountability
c. Peace Building and Conflict Prevention
Constitutional and Legislative Reforms
Following the endorsement and promulgation of the new constitution in August 2010, attention shifted from the decades long campaign for a new dispensation to the enactment of the relevant legislation. The new constitution came with a pre-determined schedule of laws that would need to be passed to effectively operationalise the new constitution. On her part, the NCCK expressed a firm commitment to supporting the development and enactment of the laws stipulated by the new constitution. In addition, the Council remains vigilant by monitoring the existing laws so as to recommend amendments whenever the social environment necessitates the same.
Objectives of Constitutional and Legislative Reforms
• To empower Kenyans to effectively participate in the constitutional implementation process
• To scale up advocacy efforts for the enactment of just laws

Ethical Governance and Accountability
Recognizably, corruption and impunity are the greatest threats to stability, peace and prosperity in Kenya. These vices have permeated the nation like gangrene, imprisoning both the leaders and the general public, and entangling every sphere of life like an octopus. It is a sad reality that in Kenya, corruption is celebrated rather than being frowned upon. As a result, accountability and transparency systems set up by the government and non government agencies are weak and ineffective. To make the situation worse, the judicial system has been weakened to the point where persons involved in corruption and other crimes thrive on the confidence that they can do anything and get away with it.
The Council seeks to fight against corruption and impunity by empowering Kenyans to change their attitudes and embrace good governance and accountability. This will enable the citizenry fight corruption from the grassroots.
Objectives of Ethical Governance and Accountability
• To empower Kenyans to demand accountability and transparency in the utilization of public resources
• To empower citizens to demand equity in allocation of national resources

Peace Building and Conflict Prevention
The Council has a rich history in peace building and conflict management, having grown with the people of Kenya over the decades. Interventions by NCCK were quite prominent during the 1992 and 1997 elections related ethnic clashes, as well as the 2007 post election violence. Responses were also made whenever resource based conflicts have occurred between communities.
Appreciably, the conflicts that have occurred in the country were resulted from underlying causes such as inequitable access to land; historical injustices; proliferation of small and light weapons; poverty; breakdown of social structures; and provocative politics.
Objectives of Peace Building and Conflict Prevention
• To empower communities on peace building, healing and reconciliation
• To strengthen community peace structures
• To promote nationhood and ethnic harmony
• To provide safe spaces for demobilization and de-oathing

Kenya is endowed with one of the world’s richest natural ecosystem. It has a complex environment providing habitats to thousands of unique plant and animal species. However, this heritage is threatened by the increasing demands of a fast growing population coupled with a noticeable lack of a culture of environmental awareness and protection among the people. These are further exacerbated by inadequate environmental laws. So bad is the situation that by 2007, Kenya’s forest cover had dwindled to less than 1.6 per cent of land cover, an extremely low level compared to the international standard of 10 percent forest cover. It is expected that by 2015, there will be no snow on Mt Kenya.
In addition, desertification continues to expand the arid and semi arid areas in the country.
A key effect of the environmental degradation has been exposure of the country to extreme weather conditions including floods, mudslides, droughts and famine.
NCCK holds a special place for environmental conservation and works to engage in community, regional and national projects towards this.
Objectives of Environment
• To mobilize churches and communities to understand and respond to climate change
• To promote ecologically sustainable methods of utilization of natural resources
• To promote proactive responses to disasters
• To contribute towards conservation and protection of the environment and other natural resources
