Mrs Waihura during the regional Tekeleza project trainingWith funding of UN Women the National Council of Churches has conducted empowerment trainings for women across the country.
These are aimed at educating women on the gains of the new constitution and encouraging them to take leadership positions that have arisen from the new constitution.
Recruitment of women for training is always a challenging issue. One of the women trained under the Tekeleza Project in Nyeri is Mrs Jane Waihura, the Women’s Guild Coordinator for PCEA Mt Kenya Region.
She is also the secretary to the PCEA Mt Kenya Regional Assembly – the highest decision making organ of the region. Besides that she is the Secretary Kirinyaga County Women Think Tank.
After a training on gender gains in the constitution conducted by, she was very passionate and desired to replicate what she leant in her church. Using the PCEA pervasive structure, she replicated the training in all the 11 presbyteries under PCEA Mt Kenya Region.
So far she has trained 600 women leaders within the PCEA church in the region on the gender gains in the constitution. Through the training she has encouraged women to vie and support women candidates in the next general elections and register as voter and mobilize others to do so, the one-third gender rule. The training has also encouraged them to register as members of political parties in readiness for the polls among others.
After the empowerment program, the women leaders are lobbying the PCEA organs to comply with the one-third rule in the governing structures of the church. She has encountered some challenges including low level of education among the women leaders that may bar them from aspiring for political seats and understanding the constitution, low interest of women leaders in political seats and disapproval by spouses and church members over political participation.
Jane holds a Bachelors Degree in Education and is mandated to convene the women network within the PCEA.
