Plant Trees, GS Calls on Christians
The General Secretary, Reverend Canon Peter Karanja, has called on churches to seriously engage in planting of trees.
Speaking during a tree planting ceremony at Zion Harvest Mission church, Kisumu, the General Secretary said that caring for the environment is an expression of Christian faithfulness and witness. There is therefore a need for each Christian to plant trees at their homes, churches, schools and any other place they have access to.
“The environment of our country, which has for years been ravaged by drought and massive degradation, will only be repaired if each of us engages in individual efforts”, he said.
Through the tree planting initiative, Zion Harvest Mission intends to plant trees in the compounds of all its churches and schools. A tree nursery has been established at the headquarters for this purpose.
Speaking during the same function, Bishop Nicholas Oloo, the head of the church, said that they will specifically propagate trees that have relevance beyond environmental conservation.
“We will be planting fruit trees and those with medicinal value”, Bishop Oloo pointed out.
While planting a tree, the General Secretary prayed that “May this Zion Harvest initiative spur more churches and individuals to engage and adopt this cause of environmental conservation.”
The General Secretary, his wife Reverend Jane Karanja, and the Deputy General Secretary Oliver Kisaka planted trees at the Zion Harvest Mission compound.
