Press Statement

Preamble

We the church leaders have today taken time to prayerfully reflect on the state of our nation and wish to passionately urge Kenyans to pursue peace in our nation. Further, we wish to communicate the following:


  1. 1. Peace and Security

Evidence from the ground shows that wounds inflicted during the 2007 / 2008 post election violence are still raw. In addition, most of the wounds accumulated in historical election and land related conflicts have never healed. The country is in the meantime getting into a season of heightened political activity with the danger that new wounds will be afflicted.

NCCK leads search for Peace in Tana River..

Tana River Basin Communities Validating Research Report


Members of communities living in the Tana River Basin have today kicked off a one-week exercise of validating the findings of the Participatory Action Research (PAR) that was undertaken last year. The validation is being done at Garsen.

The PAR, undertaken by the NCCK in partnership with the Life and Peace Institute (LPI), aimed at establishing the causes, actors and dynamics as well as historical initiatives into and feasible solutions to the conflict in the Tana River Basin.

Mrs Waihura during the regional Tekeleza project trainingWith funding of UN Women the National Council of Churches has conducted empowerment trainings for women across the country.

These are aimed at educating women on the gains of the new constitution and encouraging them to take leadership positions that have arisen from the new constitution.

Recruitment of women for training is always a challenging issue. One of the women trained under the Tekeleza Project in Nyeri is Mrs Jane Waihura, the Women’s Guild Coordinator for PCEA Mt Kenya Region.

ICC Ruling: A Call for peace


We the National Council Churches of Kenya send a message calling for peace to all Kenyans in light of the ruling delivered by the International Criminal Court this afternoon. We call for sobriety and restraint as Kenyans engage in discussions and interpretations of the decision and its ramifications.

This ruling should not be seen in any way as an indictment on any community or individual but a process in search of justice for the victims and suspects of the post election violence. We ask all Kenyans to remain engaged in prayer for our Country for peace and reconciliation especially in view of the forthcoming elections.

Demystifying the ICC in local languages

In the quest to demystify the International Criminal Court, diffuse tensions and promote coexistence the National Council of Churches of Kenya in collaboration with the ICC office in Kenya has been holding grassroots forums across the Country. 

In the Forums NCCK and the ICC officers have been training locals on the ICC and peace implications in specific high risk areas. 

To enhance a greater understanding of the Court's operations, the NCCK has now translated a description book of the Court into different languages. These include Kikuyu, Kalenjin and Luo.

The books are being distributed to the locals to ensure they have a clear understanding on the working of the Court including its jursidiction, mandate and operations.

NCCK hopes that through this we can diffuse any political undertones that may create inter-community conflict and disharmony even as the ICC process continues. As the ruling of the Cases against Kenya nears NCCK hopes that the grassroots leaders trained will be key in promoting peace and coexistence.
