NCCK Takes lead in HIV AIDs destigmatization
Canon Karanja getting tested
The National Council of Churches of Kenya recognizes the efforts that have been made in the last three decades to deal with the impact of the HIV and AIDS in our nation and all over the world.
We especially appreciate the initiatives made by churches and other religious institutions to intervene in the suffering of our people.
Recognizably, effective responses to HIV and AIDS begin with people knowing their status and living responsibly. It was in this regard that NCCK with the support of its partners organized regional advocacy forums for clergy of member churches across the country.
The project was supported by Christian Aid International and the National Aids Control Council (NACC).
During these forums the clergy were sensitized on stigmatization of persons living with HIV AIDS and how to support both the affected and the infected.
“Initiatives are being established to ensure that those infected and affected are cared for and supported to live productive lives devoid of stigma and discrimination,” said Canon Peter Karanja, the General Secretary.
After the forums the clergy committed to end stigmatization and mainstream support for the infected in the church programs including sermons, interactive forums and bible studies.
The Clergy set Sunday 27th November, 2011 as the HIV/AIDS Voluntary Counseling and testing Sunday. This acted as an initiative to encourage and support churches to provide regular HIV counseling and testing services to their congregations.
“We commend the courage of the over 2,000 congregants who tested across the country last Sunday,” said Canon Karanja.
Dr Kibicho being tested
During the Executive Committee meeting held between December 2-3, 2011 NCCK Chairman Dr Charles Kibicho and General Secretary Canon Peter Karanja led clergy to know their status.
The following outline of the people who were tested across the regions during the November 27, 2011 during the HIV AIDs Sunday:
